There was this 16-year-old Filipina high school student from Iloilo who earned a lot of praises from the people all over the world because of her amazing discovery. She discovered that “Sarisa” or the very common “Aratiles fruit” in the Philippines can actually be a cure to diabetes. Maria Isabel Layson, is the young Filipina Scientist who won as one of the winners of the 2019 National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF) held last February.
Aside from it, she is also one of the 12 lucky candidates to join the International Science and Engineering Fair that was held in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. She represents our country in one of the biggest pre-college Science Research Competition in the world. She was actually the first from her batch to receive the “Gokongwei Brothers Foundation Young Scientist Award”.
Her individual study was entitled “Bioactive Component, Antioxidant Activity and Antidiabetic Properties of Muntingia calabura Linn. An In Vitro Study”. She discovered that an “Aratiles fruit” can possibly cure a type 2 diabetes. As we all know about the abundance of the “Aratiles fruit” anywhere in our country, it was indeed very good news to many Filipinos here and outside of the country. According to the young Scientist, eating the fruit can be the cheapest way to cure diabetes but the use of its branches, leaves, and flowers that contains anti-oxidants can also be used because of its natural anti-diabetic properties.
Diabetes is a disease in which our blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels become too high. Glucose comes from the foods we eat. Insulin is actually a hormone that helps the glucose get into our cells to give them energy. With type 1 diabetes, our body does not make insulin. While in type 2 diabetes, our body doesn’t make or use our insulin well.
